OUT AND ABOUT IN OXFORD, The Radcliffe Camera and The Bodleian

We have visited the Radcliffe Camera and the Bodleian Library, where we saw exhibitions on the Shelley family including Mary, author of Frankenstein and another smaller exhibit on Alfred Edmeades  Bestall, author and creator of Rupert Bear.
The Radcliffe Camera, houses part of the Bodleian
collection.
Looking up at the ceiling in part of the Bodleian

where we saw the Rupert Bear exhibition.

The Bodleian is spread out over several buildings, the Old Bodleian is built around a square with decorative stonework over doorways and on the faces of buildings, it is a most impressive place.
The 5 storied Gate Tower, known as the Tower of Five Orders, is at the Eastern end of the Quad. This is the inner face of the tower. Twin pairs of classical columns grace each level, one above the other representing the classical architectural features: Tuscan,Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite. It is very impressive.

Signs written in Latin above each entry denote the original school, they are decorated on each side of the sign with carved faces of scholars or benefactors.

Carved decoration over an entry way.

The original oak doors from Catte Street, in the Tower of Five Orders dating from the 15th Century.
