Oxford Pubs continued

Wednesday saw us in Broad Street at the White Horse, another tiny pub sandwiched between two branches of Blackwell's Bookshop. Now that's a sight to behold, it is absolutely huge. The shop takes up two levels above ground level and then goes down below ground level and spreads out underTrinity College and has around 5, yes folks I said 5 kilometres of shelving!!

Back to the pub! Tiny little space, that it i,s it is cosy and serves the best Home made Fisherman's Pie, full of crab, cod and crayfish, in a white sauce and topped with creamy mashed potato served with vegies, Michael had the Beefsteak and Ale Pie with mashed potatoes and vegies. It was quite different from the Beef and Ale pie from The Bear, but equally yummy! We also had desert today and although both the Sticky Pudding and Custard and the Homemade Cheesecake were really good, in hindsight desert was probably a mistake!
Tucked away down the very narrow St Helen's Passage, near the Bridge of Sighs you stumble across The turf Tavern. Pub number three on our lunch time treat list!Again the food was superb and so was the service. This proved to be the largest of the three pubs we have visited so far, it is also the most out of the way and has the lowest ceilings. I thought Michael was going to decapitate himself, he kept forgetting to duck!! Today I opted for fish and chips and was presented with the biggest, tastiest piece of cod with chips, peas and tartare sauce, really good. Michael chose the Roast Beef in Yorkshire Pudding Wrap with chips and peas. We were both smart enough to pass on desert.

Today, for the first time I decided to try the beer, couldn't face it straight so opted for a shandy, and really enjoyed it.
All three of the pubs we've been to lay claims to being either the oldest or one of the oldest pubs in Oxford, they have all featured in the TV series Inspector Morse, so add that to the fact that over the years some very famous scholars and academics have patronised their establishments and now we have too!!!!!!!!!
